Household Hazardous Waste

If household hazardous waste is not disposed of properly, it can not only cause health and safety issues for our sanitation works, it can end up in our lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater. Learn about how to properly dispose of household hazardous waste, by visiting Dane County Clean Sweep. Household hazardous waste include a variety of common household products, including:

  • Rechargeable and lithium batteries (no alkaline),
  • Cleaning and polishing chemicals,
  • Gasoline, motor oil, and antifreeze,
  • Fertilizers, pesticides and other lawn chemicals,
  • Pool chemicals, and
  • Paint and paint-related materials.

What You Can Do

  • Only buy as much of a product as you need. 
  • Safely dispose of household hazardous waste at Dane County Clean Sweep. Do not place it in your cart for curbside pickup as this could cause undesired outcomes such as fires, harming sanitation workers, or pollution our natural water resources.
  • Avoid placing household hazardous waste near the curb. It will not be picked up and increases the chance of potential spills! 
  • Store chemicals indoors to avoid spills that may our lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater.
